Inside Oppo's 10x 50MP Camera Innovation for Find X9 Ultra

Oppo has developed the world's first 10x 50MP periscope telephoto camera for the Find X9 Ultra, solving a long-standing problem in smartphone photography. Previous 10x zoom lenses suffered from severely limited light intake and low pixel counts due to the challenge of fitting such a long focal length into a phone. Oppo's solution uses a quintuple prism design that's just 29mm long—significantly shorter than the 41mm a single prism would require—while delivering an f/3.5 aperture that captures three times more light than earlier 10x telephoto lenses.

The system pairs this with a customized Samsung JNL sensor featuring sensor shift stabilization, crucial for handheld shooting at extreme zoom ranges. Since the sensor offers 50MP resolution, in-sensor zoom extends the effective reach to 20x. The Find X9 Ultra also includes two 200MP cameras: the main module uses the largest 200MP sensor yet—the 1/1.12" Sony Lytia 901—paired with an f/1.5 lens that Oppo says matches the light gathering of 1"-type cameras. A 3x telephoto with a 15cm minimum focus distance handles macro shots, while a 50MP ultra-wide captures 56% more light than its predecessor.

For users wanting even more reach, Oppo's Hasselblad Earth Explorer Kit adds a 300mm teleconverter with 16 glass elements, delivering 13x optical zoom—or 30x with in-sensor cropping. The camera system represents a significant leap in smartphone imaging capabilities, packing professional-grade telephoto and wide-angle performance into a single device.
