OpenAI's Smart Speaker Faces Apple Lawsuit

OpenAI's first hardware product, a portable, screenless smart speaker designed as a "humanlike AI companion," is reportedly powered by ChatGPT and GPT-Live. The device aims to control smart home accessories, manage messages, and learn user habits, featuring mechanical movement and a camera for environmental awareness.

CEO Sam Altman and former Apple designer Jony Ive have teased the device, describing its "incredible contextual awareness" and potential as a "new type of computer built for AI." Prototypes are said to be "jaw-droppingly good."

However, the product is at the center of a legal dispute, with Apple accusing OpenAI of stealing trade secrets, including a metal finishing technique. Apple claims OpenAI's hardware business is "rotten to its core." People familiar with the project believe it's unlikely to violate Apple's secrets, noting its distinctiveness from Apple's HomePod.

Initially rumored for 2026, the device is now expected in 2027. An injunction sought by Apple could impact its release.
