iPhone 18 Pro Price Jump to $1,399 Driven by Memory Chip Shortage

Apple confirmed this week that price increases are coming across its device lineup, with The Wall Street Journal estimating the iPhone 18 Pro could debut at $1,399. This represents a potential $200-$300 jump from the current $1,099 iPhone 17 Pro base price, driven primarily by surging component costs rather than new features.

CEO Tim Cook acknowledged Apple faces rising memory chip costs amid global shortages of DRAM and NAND flash storage. Samsung Electronics and Micron Technology have shifted production toward enterprise AI servers, reducing supply for consumer electronics. Cook said the company is still determining which devices will see increases, with details expected alongside the September launch.

TechInsights analysis shows DRAM costs could rise from $39 to $145 for the 12GB in the iPhone 18 Pro, while 256GB flash storage jumps from $13 to $51. These increases push the iPhone 18 Pro's total bill of materials to approximately $726, up 25% from the iPhone 17 Pro's $582. The new variable aperture camera system adds another 50% to camera costs alone.

To maintain margins, Apple may opt for standardized pricing around $1,299 or push to $1,399 when factoring in camera upgrades. The iPhone 18 Pro Max would likely start $100 higher, while the rumored foldable iPhone Ultra targets the $2,000 mark. Consumers face sticker shock as AI infrastructure demands reshape the semiconductor market.
