Google Gemini Spark Brings AI File Automation to macOS Desktop

Google launched Gemini Spark for macOS today, extending its AI automation capabilities to local file management and desktop workflows. The update adds a dedicated Spark tab to the Gemini app sidebar, allowing the AI agent to perform actions on files stored directly on users' computers rather than simply responding to chat queries.

Users can automate tasks like sorting PDFs into labeled subfolders or extracting invoice data to populate Google Workspace budget spreadsheets on recurring schedules. Folder access permissions remain under user control, with the ability to grant or revoke visibility at any time. Google plans to enable cross-device task initiation, letting users start Mac workflows from their phones in future updates.

New third-party integrations expand Spark's reach across web and mobile platforms, including Google Tasks, Google Keep, Canva, Dropbox, Instacart, OpenTable, and Zillow Rentals. These connections enable practical actions such as converting notes to task lists, restaurant reservations, grocery ordering, and apartment tour bookings. Custom Model Context Protocol server support and real-time topic tracking round out the feature set.

The beta release targets Google AI Ultra subscribers in the United States, requiring the $99-per-month subscription plan and Gemini desktop app version 1.80.15.516. This positions Google's AI assistant as a direct competitor to Apple's Siri enhancements while leveraging the same underlying Gemini infrastructure that powers other AI features across platforms.
