Google Cuts Play Store Fees, Opens Alternative Payments

Google has shifted its Play Store policy after the Epic Games lawsuit. From June 30, developers in the UK, US, and EU can link users to external sites or use any billing system. The change follows a settlement that demanded lower commissions and more payment freedom.

New fee tiers replace the former flat 30% cut. For earnings below $1 million, a flat 10% service fee applies. Above that threshold, new installs face 20%, while existing installs carry 25%, except auto‑renewing subscriptions. An extra 5% charges cover Google Play billing transactions.

Apps qualifying for Games Level Up or Apps Experience will see fees drop to 10–20%. Link‑out fees hit 20% for earnings over $1 million. Google also opens a 20% link‑out rate for non‑Play billing in the same bracket. The restructuring targets developers who prefer alternative payment paths.

The rollout begins in June for key markets and expands to Australia, Japan, and South Korea by year‑end, with the rest of the world following in September 2027. These adjustments could influence Apple’s ongoing litigation with Epic, as competitors align their fee structures under new regulatory pressures.
