EU Orders Google to Grant Rival AI Access on Android

The European Commission has formally ordered Google to provide third-party AI services with the same access to Android device features as its own Gemini AI. This directive, stemming from the Digital Markets Act (DMA), mandates equal interoperability for software makers.

Google is granted a full year to comply with the DMA requirements, with a deadline of August 1, 2027, for implementing most changes. The EC's demands include allowing AI apps access via voice commands, enabling cross-app actions, facilitating background tasks, and granting access to device sensors and hardware resources, including on-device AI models.

This situation mirrors Apple's recent challenges with the DMA regarding Siri AI access in the EU. While Apple sought regulatory agreements, Google proceeded with Gemini integration and now faces the consequences. Google has expressed concerns that the EC's mandate could compromise user privacy and security, stating it plans to advocate for a balanced approach.
