iOS 27 introduces a significant audio enhancement for AirPods users: a custom three-band equalizer. Unlike previous iOS EQ settings that were limited to Apple Music, this new feature directly integrates into AirPods settings and applies to all audio playback. The custom EQ profile syncs across your paired Apple devices, including iPhone, iPad, and Mac.

To utilize this feature, you need AirPods equipped with the H2 chip, specifically AirPods Pro 2, AirPods Pro 3, AirPods 4, and AirPods Max 2. Older models are not compatible. Additionally, the latest AirPods beta firmware is required. Users can enable beta updates in Settings > AirPods > AirPods Beta Updates. After enabling, place AirPods in their case near a powered, unlocked iPhone to download the firmware.

Adjusting the EQ involves navigating to Settings > [Your AirPods] > Audio & Routing > Equalizer. Here, you can select 'Custom' and manipulate the low, mid, and high frequency sliders to tailor the sound. A real-time playback control allows you to hear adjustments instantly. Options to 'Reset' or select 'Recommended' are also available. This functionality will be present in iPadOS 27 and macOS 27 Golden Gate upon their general release, expected in September.
