Apple's iOS 26.4 Family Sharing Update Lets Adults Use Separate Payment Methods

iOS 26.4 introduces a significant change to Family Sharing, allowing adult members to use their own payment methods for purchases. Previously, all group members had to share a single payment method when enabling purchase sharing. Now, adults can input separate payment details, reducing financial entanglement when sharing apps, music, or movies.

This update simplifies content sharing among friends, siblings, or colleagues. The family organizer still pays by default, but other adults can opt out by adding their own card. Apple’s revised support document confirms this flexibility, though child accounts remain tied to the organizer’s payment method. The change eliminates the need for complex account balance management previously required for individual payments.

The modification appears in Apple’s release notes and updated purchase sharing guidelines. While not mandatory, using separate payment methods offers greater autonomy. For example, a family member could share a streaming subscription without the organizer covering costs or needing to pre-fund an Apple Account balance.

iOS 26.4 is set to launch publicly next week, with the update likely appearing alongside other iOS and iPadOS 26 features. This adjustment reflects Apple’s ongoing refinement of shared ecosystem tools, balancing convenience with parental controls for minors.
