Apple shuts three stores, unionized Towson closure sparks protest

Apple will shut down three U.S. retail locations on the night of June 20, posting notices on its website. The stores slated for closure are Apple Trumbull in Connecticut, Apple North County in Escondido, California, and Apple Towson Town Center in Maryland. Apple cited “declining conditions” at the malls housing each outlet as the “difficult decision.”

The Towson shop holds a unique place: its staff became Apple’s first unionized retail employees in the United States in 2022, joining the IAM CORE coalition and signing a collective bargaining agreement in 2024. Union members have staged protests and attracted support from Maryland lawmakers, accusing the company of unfair treatment because non‑union staff at the other two stores receive transfer offers.

Apple says the contract obliges it to rehire or transfer workers only if a new store opens within 50 miles of the closing site; otherwise, severance applies, which the company is providing. No plans exist for a replacement store near Towson, though the agreement allows a right‑of‑first‑refusal if a location opens within 18 months. The dispute highlights tension between corporate restructuring and emerging retail unions.
