Apple captured 21 percent of global smartphone shipments in the first quarter of 2026, becoming the world's top smartphone brand for the first time ever in a Q1. The company grew shipments 9 percent year-over-year while the overall market contracted 3 percent. Samsung matched Apple's 21 percent share with flat growth, followed by Xiaomi at 12 percent, OPPO at 10 percent, and vivo at 7 percent.

The iPhone 17 series dominated sales, with the standard model becoming the best-selling smartphone globally in Q1 2026. Apple's lineup swept the top three positions in Counterpoint's Global Handset Model Sales Tracker. CEO Tim Cook noted the iPhone 17 family is the most popular lineup in Apple's history, driven by strong demand across multiple markets.

Apple's success stems from proactive supply chain management and improved sales in China, according to Counterpoint. The company maintained premium pricing while competitors struggled with memory chip shortages as suppliers prioritize AI data center customers over smartphone manufacturers. These shortages could persist through late 2027, potentially impacting all brands.

While Xiaomi shipments fell 19 percent and OPPO dropped 4 percent year-over-year, Apple's strategic inventory management and pricing discipline helped it outperform rivals during the semiconductor crisis.
