Apple Cash adds receipt‑scan bill splitting in iOS 27

Apple plans to roll out a receipt‑scanning bill‑splitting tool in the upcoming iOS 27. The feature lets users snap a photo of a check, parses line items and creates individual payment requests that can be sent via the Wallet app. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman says Apple will unveil it at WWDC next week, and it will be available to all iPhone models with the iOS release.

Apple Cash, currently limited to U.S. users, will power the new split‑bill flow. Recipients can approve their share through the Messages interface or confirm payment on an Apple Watch, streamlining group outings and restaurant tabs. The addition joins other Wallet enhancements, such as a custom‑pass creator that converts scanned tickets and memberships into digital cards.

This capability addresses a long‑standing demand for native receipt handling, reducing reliance on third‑party apps that often require manual entry. By embedding the function in core Apple services, the company tightens its ecosystem lock‑in while offering a frictionless peer‑to‑peer payment experience. Consumers will soon split checks with a single tap. The move also positions Apple against services like Venmo that dominate the peer‑to‑peer market.
