iOS 27 Bill-Splitting Feature Challenges Venmo and Splitwise

Apple is reportedly introducing a bill-splitting feature in iOS 27 that lets users photograph receipts and divide costs among contacts. The feature, expected to debut at WWDC, processes payments through Apple Wallet and Apple Cash, allowing item-level assignment and automatic tax and tip calculations.

After snapping a receipt, users can allocate specific items to friends and send payment requests directly through Messages. Recipients approve charges using their iPhone or Apple Watch, streamlining what's typically a manual back-and-forth process. This eliminates the need for separate apps or calculator math when dining out with groups.

The move puts pressure on established players like Venmo and Cash App, which currently handle peer-to-peer payments for informal debts. Third-party splitting apps including Splitwise and Splid face direct competition from Apple's integrated solution.

Apple's entry into bill splitting reflects its strategy to expand Apple Pay's utility beyond simple transactions, leveraging existing Wallet infrastructure to capture more everyday financial interactions.
