Apple has announced a new Mac Studio with M5 Max and M5 Ultra chips, discontinuing the M4 Max and M3 Ultra models from March 2025. The design remains unchanged, but all upgrades are internal.

Key improvements include next-generation SSD architecture on PCIe Gen 6 with up to twice the read/write speeds, Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6 support, and 35% recycled content. The M5 Max now features an 18-core CPU with 6 super cores and 12 performance cores, a 32-core GPU (configurable to 40-core), and up to 614GB/s memory bandwidth.

The M5 Ultra offers a 30-core CPU (configurable to 36-core) and a 64-core GPU (configurable to 80-core), with 1.2TB/s memory bandwidth—50% higher than before. Both chips include Neural Accelerators for each GPU core and third-generation ray tracing.

Memory options remain up to 512GB, but the 128GB option has been withdrawn. The starting prices are $2,499 for the M5 Max and $5,499 for the M5 Ultra. Overall, the upgrades focus on performance and efficiency, making the new models a significant leap over their predecessors.
