YouTube rolled out a suite of Shorts updates that will appear over the next few weeks. The headline change is Clear Screen mode, which expands a Short to fill the entire display and temporarily hides all on‑screen text, buttons and UI elements. The feature promises a distraction‑free viewing experience for mobile users on both Android and iOS platforms, expanding its reach.

A new 2x playback option lets viewers watch Shorts at double speed, catering to those who binge content quickly. YouTube also swapped the thumbs‑up icon for a heart, aiming for a more personal interaction cue. Muting becomes a two‑tap action: pause the video, then press the fresh mute button that appears on the screen and works seamlessly across portrait and landscape orientations.

The dislike button disappears, replaced by feedback choices such as “Not interested” and “Don’t recommend this channel,” which aim to refine recommendation algorithms. By tightening controls and simplifying interaction, YouTube hopes to keep Shorts competitive against TikTok’s fast‑consumption model. These tweaks give creators clearer signals while giving viewers tighter command of their feed for advertisers seeking higher engagement rates within the short‑form ecosystem.
