Shorts Update: 2x Playback, Clear Screen, Dislike Removal

YouTube Shorts has rolled out a suite of usability upgrades that echo TikTok’s features. The platform now supports 2x playback, a single‑tap clear screen mode, a redesigned heart‑like button, and refines recommendation controls. These tweaks aim to streamline viewing for users accustomed to short‑form video flows.

To double speed, viewers hold either side of the screen; releasing restores normal pace, while a downward swipe keeps 2x. The clear screen toggle strips overlays of captions, usernames, and icons, delivering a cleaner, more immersive experience. The heart icon replaces the thumbs‑up, but functions identically.

YouTube also removed the dislike button from Shorts, citing that a simple thumbs‑down offers limited insight. Instead, users select Not interested or Don’t recommend this channel from the three‑dot menu, giving YouTube richer signals to fine‑tune future recommendations. Creators still see historical dislike counts in YouTube Studio.

Additional tweaks let users mute Shorts directly from the player, bypassing device volume controls. By adopting these changes, Google closes feature gaps left by competitors while safeguarding creators’ analytics. The updates provide a cleaner, faster experience for viewers eager to consume short videos without distraction.
