YouTube Shorts removes dislikes, adds double speed playback in latest update

YouTube Shorts is getting a significant overhaul with several interface changes designed to improve user experience. The platform will completely remove dislike buttons on Shorts, replacing them with more granular feedback controls like 'Not Interested' and 'Don't recommend this channel.' A heart icon now replaces the traditional like button for what YouTube calls a more meaningful interaction method.

The changes come as Shorts continues its rapid growth trajectory, reaching 200 billion daily views as of last year to match Instagram Reels. YouTube's decision to eliminate dislikes follows years of hiding dislike counts on the main platform, though some users argue this makes it harder to flag low-quality AI content. Others note the dislike button artificially inflated engagement metrics anyway.

YouTube is also borrowing from TikTok with a new 'Clear mode' that removes interface elements for distraction-free viewing. Users can access this through the three-dot settings menu. Additionally, Shorts now supports double-speed playback by tapping and holding the screen, then dragging down to lock it for the entire video.

The rollout is happening gradually across regions, with some features appearing in certain markets before others. These updates reflect YouTube's ongoing efforts to compete directly with TikTok while refining how users consume and interact with short-form video content.
