YouTube Changes Public View Count Tracking Starting August 24

YouTube announced a change to how it counts public views on videos, effective August 24 globally. The platform will now count a view as soon as playback begins, aligning with its existing Shorts metric. Previously, different formats used varying thresholds for view counts.

The update aims to reduce metric confusion and provide creators with clearer data on content exposure. Engaged Views, which track viewers who watch a video for a minimum duration, will still be tracked separately for creators prioritizing engagement metrics. This shift mirrors changes made to Shorts analytics in 2025, which removed time-based requirements to align with competitors like TikTok and Instagram.

While public view counts will rise, YouTube emphasizes that monetization eligibility and earnings remain unaffected. Creators must still meet Partner Program requirements, including watch hours and subscriber thresholds, with earnings based on Engaged Shorts views and Watch Hours visible in YouTube Analytics' Advanced Mode.
