Samsung Chooses Thicker Glass for Fold8 Wide, Thinner for Ultra

Samsung will use in its flagship ultra‑thin glass of different thicknesses on its upcoming Galaxy Z Fold8 (wide) and Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra, slated for July alongside the Galaxy Z Flip8. Ultra‑thin glass sits atop the flexible AMOLED display, reducing creases and shielding against drops.

The wide model will feature a 60μm‑thick UTG, while the taller Ultra will use a thinner 45μm layer, matching the current Fold7's thickness. A thicker UTG should dull the crease but may sacrifice flexibility, increasing stress from repeated folds.

If the thicker glass performs as expected, Samsung may adopt it for the Fold8 Ultra successor in 2027. The move reflects the company’s ongoing battle to balance durability with a seamless folding experience, a key concern for consumers who value both screen longevity and aesthetic smoothness.

Reviewers expect the thicker glass to reduce visible creases during daily use, potentially lowering repair costs for high‑end foldables. However, the added rigidity could lead to earlier failure under extreme bending, a risk that Samsung must mitigate with improved hinge design. Consumers will judge the trade‑off once the devices hit stores today now.
