Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon was photographed in Seoul meeting Samsung’s chip‑design leadership, a trip focused on securing a 2nm production line for the upcoming Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 SoC. The sighting revives rumors that the U.S. chipmaker may once again rely on the Korean giant for its flagship processor in the next generation market overall.

Back at CES in January, Amon disclosed preliminary talks with Samsung about moving the elite chipset to the Korean fab. Qualcomm had shifted its high‑end volume to TSMC in 2022 after Samsung struggled with yield and thermal issues. Recent improvements at Samsung and rising TSMC pricing appear to have reopened the door for future collaborations.

If Samsung secures the contract, it will mark the first top‑tier Qualcomm fab partnership in Korea since the 2022 migration. Analysts expect the 2nm process to deliver efficiency gains and higher clock speeds, positioning Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 against competing ARM designs. Consumers could see thinner phones with longer battery life as a result.

Samsung’s renewed credibility stems from solving the chronic yield and overheating problems that drove Qualcomm to TSMC years ago. Combined with TSMC’s recent price hikes, the Korean firm now offers a financially attractive alternative for cutting‑edge nodes. The outcome will directly affect flagship Android pricing and performance tiers for the 2024 release cycle globally overall.
