iPhone 18 base model to use lower‑grade OLED panel

A new leak suggests the base iPhone 18 will step back on display tech to cut costs. The device reportedly will use Samsung’s M12+ OLED panel, a modest tweak of the M12 material that powered the iPhone 14 Pro and Galaxy S23 Ultra. By contrast, the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max are slated for the newer M16 substrate introduced with the iPhone 16 Pro.

The downgrade matters because M12+ delivers slightly lower luminous efficiency than the M16, meaning the panel consumes more power for the same brightness. Apple’s upcoming A20 chip, built on a 2nm process, promises energy savings that could be offset by the less efficient screen, potentially eroding battery life gains.

If the base model’s screen does sap efficiency, Apple could compensate with a marginally larger battery, a tactic it used on prior generations. Consumers eyeing the iPhone 18 should weigh the cost savings against any perceptible drop in endurance, especially since the device is slated for a spring launch and will sit beside more premium Pro variants.

Analysts see the move as Apple tightening margins while preserving flagship appeal. By reserving the advanced M16 for the Pro line, the company keeps its premium edge intact, leaving budget‑focused buyers with a modestly cheaper but still capable device. The trade‑off will likely surface in real‑world screen brightness and overnight charge times.
