AT&T Adds New Prepaid Fee

AT&T will begin charging prepaid customers a new $2.63 fee starting June 22. The "Administrative & Regulatory Cost Recovery Fee" applies to each service payment, expanding a charge already applied to postpaid accounts. The move affects all prepaid plan users, adding another fixed cost to wireless bills.

Postpaid customers already pay $3.99 per line for this administrative fee, which was increased from $3.49 last December. AT&T positions the charges as necessary for covering network connectivity costs, regulatory requirements, and government fees. The company claims these adjustments help maintain their wireless network infrastructure.

The new fee represents another industry trend of carriers adding surcharges beyond base plan costs. While relatively small, these administrative charges accumulate for customers with multiple lines or frequent payments. AT&T's prepaid option now carries similar cost structures as their postpaid plans, narrowing a key differentiator for budget-conscious consumers.
