Apple is developing a cross-device copy-paste feature for iOS and Windows PCs, driven by Microsoft's request under the EU's Digital Markets Act. The feature will allow users to copy text or content on an iPhone and paste it on a Windows PC, and vice versa, without requiring app foregrounding. The proposed implementation mirrors Apple's approach to third-party wearables in iOS 26.5. Users will need to consent to sharing their pasteboard with paired devices. Currently, clipboard access requires apps to be in the foreground and explicit user approval for each action. Microsoft argued that background synchronization is essential for productivity workflows, which Apple acknowledges as a significant engineering challenge.

While the feature is likely EU-focused initially, Apple could expand it globally. Past DMA compliance has seen mixed rollouts, with some features available worldwide and others limited to the EU. The process involves balancing regulatory requirements with technical feasibility. Apple's timeline suggests a cautious rollout, prioritizing testing before broader availability.
