Android 17 'Continue On' Enables Seamless Device Handoffs

Google unveiled Android 17's 'Continue On' feature during Google I/O 2026, enabling app developers to offer cross-device task continuity. Users can start an activity on one Android device and seamlessly transition to another within the same ecosystem, maintaining their progress without interruption.

This works via handoff suggestions appearing in the receiving device's taskbar. For example, a document drafted in Google Docs on a phone can be continued instantly on a tablet. The system supports both app-to-app transitions and web handoffs, where activities open in a browser if the app isn't installed on the target device.

The bidirectional feature initially supports only mobile-to-tablet transitions at launch. It will arrive with the Android 17 release candidate. This move strengthens Google's integrated hardware strategy, offering a cohesive user experience across phones and tablets that directly competes with similar cross-platform efforts from other tech giants.
