Xfinity launches same‑day Wi‑Fi for new users

Comcast Xfinity rolled out a same‑day Wi‑Fi option for new subscribers, letting them order a Gateway modem/router at sign‑up and receive it within hours. The service bypasses the typical one‑to‑two‑day wait and also offers in‑store pickup at any of the company’s roughly 700 stores nationwide. Availability starts in 20 U.S. markets, with plans to broaden rollout by early 2027.

Customers in cities such as Atlanta, Chicago, Denver, Philadelphia and San Francisco can get online immediately, even before the modem is active, by tapping Xfinity’s extensive network of public Wi‑Fi hotspots. The hotspots deliver modest speeds but serve as a fallback when home service hiccups. Users must install the Gateway and activate service themselves through the Xfinity app.

The move pressures rivals to shrink installation delays and highlights the value of instant connectivity in a market where consumers expect instant service. By leveraging its own hardware and hotspot infrastructure, Xfinity reduces churn risk for new sign‑ups and reinforces its position as a broadband heavyweight in the United States.

While the perk currently excludes existing customers, the in‑store pickup option ensures that most prospects can still obtain a device the same day, even outside the limited delivery zones. Analysts see the service as a tactical response to growing competition from cable‑free providers that promise rapid setup, forcing the incumbent to tighten its onboarding experience.
