Comcast Turns Xfinity Routers Into Motion Sensors

Comcast launched Xfinity Shield, a new home protection platform that includes a feature to turn routers into motion sensors. The platform offers two services: Wi Fi Shield provides built-in security for Xfinity Internet customers at no extra cost, while Shield Select adds hardware, AI monitoring, and emergency services for $15 per month.

The standout feature, Wi Fi Motion, uses the Xfinity Gateway and connected devices to detect motion without cameras or traditional detectors. It monitors changes in radio frequency signals between the gateway and Wi-Fi devices, sending alerts through the Xfinity app when unexpected activity occurs. The system doesn't record video or identify individuals.

Available on Technicolor XB7, XB8, XB9, XB10, MXB1, and XER10 routers, Wi Fi Motion is opt-in. However, the support page notes that Comcast may share motion data with third parties for law enforcement investigations, disputes, or court orders.

While motion data won't be sold to advertisers, privacy-conscious users can disable the feature entirely.
