X has revealed to UK Members of Parliament that it suspended 800 million accounts in 2024 to combat state-backed manipulation campaigns. Wifredo Fernández, X's head of global government affairs, told the foreign affairs committee that these suspensions occurred over a 12-month period for violating platform manipulation and spam rules.

Russia allegedly orchestrated most of these spam operations, followed by China and Iran, with Russian accounts attempting to 'stoke division' and influence the 2024 US Presidential Election. Fernández warned that manipulation efforts continue daily, with X suspending 'several hundred million additional accounts' last year from foreign state-backed campaigns.

These massive suspensions represent a significant portion of X's user base, which Statista estimates at 429 million in early 2024, with approximately 300 million monthly active users worldwide. The scale of these suspensions underscores the platform's ongoing battle against coordinated disinformation campaigns ahead of major elections.
