Windows 11 Start Menu Gets Size Options After User Complaints

Microsoft is rolling out new Windows 11 Start menu customization options to Insiders in the Experimental channel. Users can finally choose between Small and Large menu sizes, a direct response to complaints about the menu becoming nearly twice as big after a November update. Windows Latest previously documented the bloat issue, and Microsoft told the publication it was aware of the feedback.

Beyond size options, the update introduces section-level toggles for Pinned, Recommended, and All areas, letting users simplify their Start menu experience. You can also disable file recommendations specifically in the Start menu without affecting other areas, and hide your profile picture for privacy during screen sharing or streaming. These toggles will roll out over the coming weeks.

The taskbar is getting a major flexibility upgrade too. Insiders can now position the taskbar on any screen edge—top, bottom, left, or right—with corresponding icon alignment options. When placed on vertical edges, users can choose between top-aligned and centered icons, while horizontal positioning offers left-aligned or centered choices.
