Microsoft is addressing one of Windows 11's most criticized limitations by bringing back extensive Taskbar and Start Menu personalization features that were standard in Windows 10. Users can now move the Taskbar to any screen edge and customize icon alignment, resolving complaints about the rigid centered taskbar design that shipped with the initial release.

The customization rollout targets Windows Insiders first through the Experimental channel, with broader availability expected across Windows 11 versions 24H2, 25H2, and 26H1. Settings are consolidated under Settings > Personalization > Taskbar > Taskbar behaviors, making previously buried options more accessible to everyday users.

Start Menu changes include independent sizing options, the ability to hide sections like Pinned and Recent, and privacy enhancements for screen sharing scenarios. Microsoft is also decoupling Start recommendations from File Explorer's recent items, preventing unwanted cross-application behavior that frustrated power users. These updates arrive as the company seeks to refine the Windows 11 experience ahead of future releases.
