Why Retro Games Look Better on CRT TVs

A Super Nintendo or PlayStation looked better on retro TVs than today’s ultra‑sharp displays, and it isn’t just nostalgia.

The short answer is those games weren’t meant to be viewed on modern flat‑panel displays. They were designed for the cathode‑ray tube (CRT) that dominated their era. CRTs use electron guns that draw many horizontal scanlines each frame, creating motion that feels instantaneous, unlike LCD’s sample‑and‑hold method.

Resolution also matters. CRT screens have no native resolution; they can render 240p or 480i without the smearing seen when a flat panel is run below its native size. The ‘i’ in 480i means interlaced, which produces flicker, while ‘p’ in 240p is progressive and shows no flicker. Modern TVs often misidentify 240p as 480i and apply deinterlacing, which adds input lag and artifacts.

Because retro art was crafted for CRT characteristics—dithering, scanlines, and deep blacks that LCD backlights can’t produce—games like Final Fantasy Tactics lose their effect on modern screens. CRTs are heavy, noisy, and hard to repair, so buying one isn’t practical, but understanding why they look better helps you choose the right playback method.
