Uber and Motional have launched robotaxi rides in Las Vegas using Hyundai Ioniq 5 autonomous vehicles. Passengers requesting UberX, Uber Electric, Uber Comfort, or Uber Comfort Electric rides may now be matched with a Motional robotaxi. Riders can opt into the autonomous option through the Ride Preferences section in the Uber app and will receive notifications when matched with a robotaxi.

Passengers can decline the autonomous ride and choose a regular vehicle instead. Those who accept will unlock the vehicle through the Uber app and hear audio cues for seatbelt reminders and door closure. Human support remains available through the app for assistance. The companies began piloting this service in 2022 after establishing a 10-year partnership, with Motional's Hyundai AVs previously tested for Uber Eats autonomous deliveries in the same year.

The initial robotaxi service includes safety drivers and operates only at designated locations along Las Vegas Boulevard, including rideshare zones at major resorts and curbside areas in Downtown Las Vegas. By year's end, Uber and Motional plan to offer fully autonomous rides without human operators and expand availability throughout the city.
