President Trump has signed a proclamation imposing a 25% tariff on specific advanced computing chips, the White House announced. The move specifically targets chips like AMD's MI325X and NVIDIA's H200 that are imported into the U.S. for re-export to other countries. This follows previous threats of much broader tariffs on semiconductor imports.

The administration carved out exemptions for chips used in products sold domestically or in U.S. data centers, aiming to protect domestic tech supply chains. Trump recently approved the H200 for export to China, arguing it's no longer NVIDIA's most advanced AI chip. He stated the tariff would generate revenue, saying, "We're going to be making 25 percent on the sale of those chips."

This action escalates the ongoing trade tensions centered on semiconductor technology, a critical component for everything from consumer electronics to artificial intelligence. While narrower than earlier threats, the policy signals the administration's willingness to use tariffs as leverage to influence tech manufacturing. Industry watchers will monitor whether this limited measure precedes more comprehensive duties on imported electronics.
