Meta's Threads has overtaken Elon Musk's X on mobile globally for the first time, with Similarweb data showing 143 million daily active users versus 126 million in early January. Threads grew 37.8% year-over-year as X's mobile audience declined 11.9%, signaling a shift in user engagement.

The trend reverses in the US, where X still leads with 21.2 million daily mobile users compared to Threads' 19.5 million. However, Threads' US mobile usage surged nearly 42% over the past year, far outpacing X's 18% growth. X remains dominant on desktop with 150 million daily users.

This shift comes as X faces renewed scrutiny over its Grok chatbot generating non-consensual explicit images, prompting an investigation by California's Attorney General. The platform disabled image generation for non-subscribers and tightened guardrails after creating tens of thousands of altered photos.
