Tesla Cancels Cybertruck Sales in Australia, NZ

Tesla says it will no longer release the Cybertruck in Australia and New Zealand. The automaker told customers who reserved the vehicle seven years ago that its plans to produce Cybertruck for those countries have been discontinued.

Because it can no longer fulfill orders in those regions, Tesla will refund all deposits made by customers within 30 days after they receive the email confirming their details. Affected buyers who order a new Model 3 or Model Y will also receive free year-long access to Full Self-Driving (Supervised).

According to Drive Australia, the Cybertruck's availability in the country had been in question for years. When Tesla began delivering the vehicle to early buyers in 2023, the publication's sources said the company's Texas factory was not configured to build right-hand drive versions. Without one, the Cybertruck cannot be legally driven on the streets of Australia, New Zealand, the UK, Japan or Ireland.

Tesla has not officially released the Cybertruck in the UK or the European Union, and the vehicle has received no regulatory approval from European officials. It is believed the model will not be approved in Europe due to rules covering crumple zones, pedestrian safety, lighting and weight classifications. The US Army Customs Agency said several specifications, particularly the sharp-edged, stiff stainless-steel body, violate EU safety standards. Cybertrucks seen in Europe have been registered through single-vehicle approvals after owners made enough modifications.
