Teamsters urge DOJ to block Paramount-Warner merger over job risks

The International Brotherhood of Teamsters is formally urging the US Department of Justice to block Paramount Skydance's planned merger with Warner Bros. Discovery. The union submitted a report to the DOJ's Antitrust Division arguing the deal will consolidate power, eliminate jobs, and harm domestic production. Teamsters General President Sean O'Brien stated the merger threatens worker livelihoods and demands enforceable guarantees against layoffs and erosion of union jobs.

Citing the Disney-20th Century Fox acquisition as a damaging precedent, the union warns that past media consolidation led to eliminated production units, significant job losses, and canceled projects. Its Motion Picture division, whose members transport equipment and crew, stands to be most impacted. The Teamsters contend the merger inherently reduces competition in the market, triggering the DOJ's responsibility to intervene.

Paramount Skydance has pledged to produce 30 theatrical films annually, split between the two studios, but the union dismisses this as insufficient without binding commitments. The company's path may be smoothed by CEO David Ellison's close ties to the Trump administration, which previously granted favorable regulatory treatment. The merger's fate now hinges on whether the DOJ accepts the union's arguments or allows the deal to proceed despite documented risks to Hollywood labor.
