Marcia Lucas, the Oscar-winning editor who shaped the original Star Wars and Return of the Jedi, has died at 80 from cancer. Lucas was not only George Lucas's former wife but a pivotal creative force behind the first two films in the iconic franchise. Her work extended beyond Star Wars to include Martin Scorsese's Taxi Driver, for which she received a BAFTA nomination.

Lucas played a significant role in the direction of Star Wars and Return of the Jedi, providing critical character and scene critiques that George Lucas valued. As noted in Michael Kaminsky's book, she was one of the few people Lucas listened to carefully. Her creative contributions included suggesting Obi-Wan Kenobi's death aboard the Death Star and arranging Luke and Leia's "kiss for luck" before they were revealed to be siblings.

The family statement described Lucas's work as "known for its emotional intelligence, rhythm, and humanity — a rare ability to find the truth of a scene and bring heart, momentum, and clarity to the screen." Her legacy extends beyond technical editing to the emotional core of some of cinema's most beloved moments.
