Spotify's AI Music Detection Arms Race Begins as 44% of Uploads Are Synthetic

Spotify introduces a Verified by Spotify badge to combat AI-generated music, which accounts for 44% of daily uploads, per Deezer. The badge exclusively identifies human artists who meet strict criteria: consistent engagement, policy compliance, and profile authenticity. Over 99% of popular artists will receive verification initially, with broader rollouts planned. Deezer employs AI detection to block 99% of synthetic tracks pre-upload, contrasting Spotify's reactive approach.

Artists must prove legitimacy through engagement metrics and profile details to earn the light green checkmark, which will appear on profiles and search results. Spotify clarifies that absence of the badge doesn't preclude future eligibility. The feature builds on existing tools like Artist Profile Protection and SongDNA to flag fraudulent content.

A new context section in artist profiles—comparable to nutrition facts—will display career milestones, release history, and touring activity on mobile. This transparency aims to help listeners distinguish human creators from AI imposters. Spotify emphasizes verification as part of a broader effort to maintain platform integrity amid surging AI-generated content.

The Verified by Spotify initiative reflects industry-wide challenges in regulating synthetic media. While Deezer’s preemptive AI filtering differs from Spotify’s user-facing badges, both highlight the urgency of addressing AI’s impact on music ecosystems. Listeners may soon rely on these markers to navigate an increasingly artificial landscape.
