Spotify partners with Kobalt for AI‑powered covers

Spotify has announced a partnership with indie publisher Kobalt to add a paid AI tool that lets fans create covers and remixes of licensed songs. The new platform, which will be a Premium add‑on, will allow Kobalt’s artists—including names such as Phoebe Bridgers and IDLES—to opt in and let users repurpose their tracks via a suite of AI‑powered creative tools.

The service is positioned as a way for artists to generate additional revenue and drive discovery, with Spotify saying it will "open up additional revenue streams and new ways to drive discovery." Kobalt CEO Laurent Hubert added that artists will be "directly benefiting from the creative opportunities these new features provide."

While the tool is still in development and a launch window has not been announced, the partnership follows a similar deal with Universal Music Group that also offers AI‑generated covers to subscribers who pay extra. The platform’s cost and exact functionality—whether it will also support non‑AI covers—remain unclear.

Overall, Spotify’s move signals a growing trend toward monetizing AI‑generated music content while protecting artists’ rights through official licensing agreements.
