Spotify Mix: DJ-style transitions for playlists

Spotify has introduced a new feature called Mix, now widely available to Premium subscribers on mobile and desktop apps. This tool aims to make complex DJ mixing accessible to anyone by allowing users to permanently set transitions within their own playlists.

Unlike real-time DJing, Mix lets you adjust timing and effects for each transition. While mixing an entire playlist can be tedious, the result is a unique and shareable listening experience. The feature works only on user-created playlists, not on Spotify's generated mixes unless saved separately. To activate Mix mode, select the 'Mix' button under the play button in compatible playlists.

Spotify's Mix feature also provides helpful information like tempo (BPM) and musical key, using a shorthand called Camelot Key. This helps users intuitively understand how well songs will mix together. Users can then tweak transitions by selecting 'Auto' between songs, adjusting waveforms, and choosing from various presets for Volume, EQ, and Filter. The result is a seamless listening experience, mimicking the art of DJ mixing without the need for expensive equipment.
