SpaceX completed the first test flight of its upgraded Starship V3 vehicle, marking a significant milestone in the company's quest to reach the moon and Mars. The spacecraft launched from Starbase, Texas on Friday evening after a technical delay on Thursday. Despite losing engines during the flight, the vehicle accomplished most of its test objectives, demonstrating improved performance over previous iterations.

The Super Heavy booster ignited all 33 Raptor 3 engines at liftoff but shut down one engine during ascent. While the booster executed a directional flip maneuver, it could not complete the full boostback burn needed for landing. The booster crashed into the Gulf of Mexico, though recovery was never planned for this flight. Meanwhile, the upper-stage Ship lost one of its six Raptor engines but maintained its planned trajectory.

Approximately 30 minutes after launch, Ship deployed 20 Starlink simulators and two modified satellites that captured images of the spacecraft in space. During re-entry, the vehicle tested its heat shield performance and executed landing maneuvers before splashing down and exploding in the Indian Ocean. SpaceX CEO Elon Musk praised the team's achievement as an 'epic' first Starship V3 mission. The successful test comes as SpaceX prepares for its IPO, with shares expected to begin trading on June 12.

This flight validates critical systems for future lunar and Mars missions, proving that Starship V3 can achieve its objectives even with partial engine failures. The test data will inform improvements for upcoming flights as SpaceX works toward operational missions.
