Sony’s Playerbase lets fans appear in PlayStation games

Sony has launched The Playerbase, a service that scans fans’ likenesses for insertion into PlayStation games. The pilot will place the winner’s face as a portrait in Gran Turismo 7, let them design a logo and car exterior, and fund a Los Angeles full‑body scan. Sony says the final use of the scan remains unclear, as part of a broader push for user‑generated content.

Applicants must navigate a multi‑step process, including a standard form, video interview and additional verification, and the program is open to residents of the Americas, Europe, Asia, South Africa and Australia. Sony’s push arrives as its first‑party slate this generation has been thin, prompting questions about whether enough compatible games will exist to justify the scanning technology.

If successful, The Playerbase could give players a personalized touch in future releases, turning avatars into recognizable fans. However, without a robust pipeline of titles that support custom models, the initiative may remain a novelty rather than a lasting feature. Sony’s willingness to experiment signals a shift toward deeper player integration, even if adoption stays limited.
