Sony has filed a separate lawsuit against AI music generator Udio, distinct from the 2024 case filed with Universal and Warner. The new complaint involves 30,117 recordings allegedly used without permission to train Udio's models.

Sony attempted to add these recordings to its original complaint, but the court rejected the request on June 29. The ruling affirmed plaintiffs' right to seek damages for all copyrighted works. The songs include tracks from major artists like Beyoncé, Dolly Parton, Elvis Presley, and Michael Jackson.

Sony also accuses Udio of obtaining audio by ripping from YouTube. Udio previously admitted using YouTube data but claims fair use. Universal and Warner have since struck licensing deals with Udio, leaving Sony as the sole holdout.

Sony argues Udio's "belated embrace of licensing only underscores the unlawfulness" of its initial copying. The company demands a jury trial and statutory damages of up to $150,000 per infringed work.
