Sony has unveiled the FX5 cinema camera, slotting between the FX3 and FX6 with a new 16.6MP stacked full-frame sensor featuring three base ISO settings at 800, 4000, and 12800. The sensor enables 5K RAW recording via Sony's proprietary X-OCN codec, delivering 16-bit linear RAW with 280 trillion colors — 1,000 times more color data than 12-bit alternatives.

The FX5 introduces open gate recording at a 3:2 aspect ratio, using the full sensor width for flexible cropping and vertical video. It captures 4K at 240 fps, 4.5K at 120 fps, and 5K at 60 fps, all firsts for the line. Dual Gain mode offers up to 16 stops of dynamic range, while five-axis stabilization includes an updated Dynamic Active mode for smooth handheld footage.

Weighing 1.62 pounds, the compact body includes a removable 3.68M-dot OLED EVF, a 3.5-inch four-axis articulating display, dual CFexpress Type A and SDXC slots, full-sized HDMI, ethernet, and tri-band Wi-Fi. The new NP-FZ100 battery provides up to 130 minutes of recording.

Pre-orders start at $4,898 body-only, with an XLR handle kit at $5,498. Availability is slated for mid-August, and Sony promises future firmware updates including 4K 240p RAW and vertical-shooting UI by August 2027.
