Sony A7R VI Brings Stacked Sensor to High-Res Mirrorless Line

Sony has unveiled the A7R VI, its highest-resolution mirrorless camera ever at 67 megapixels. Unlike previous A7R models that prioritized resolution over speed, this is the first R camera with a fully stacked sensor, allowing for incredible detail AND serious shooting speeds. The camera can capture RAW bursts at 30 fps blackout-free, a massive jump from the previous model's 10 fps.

The key upgrade is the shift from a 61MP backside-illuminated sensor to a fully stacked design. This eliminates one of the biggest complaints about earlier R cameras: rolling shutter distortion. The new sensor reads out fast enough to make the electronic shutter viable in more situations. The 759-point phase-detect autofocus now covers 94% of the frame and works in light as dim as EV-6, with improved human pose estimation plus better animal, bird and vehicle detection.

Video finally gets proper attention too — the A7R VI captures 8K at 30 fps and 4K at 60/120 fps with no crop. Image stabilization is boosted to 8.5 stops, and a new dual gain function improves low-light video quality. The catch? The A7R VI costs $4,500, a significant premium over its predecessor. Pre-orders are open now with shipping starting in June.
