Snap and YouTube have settled a major lawsuit with a Kentucky school district just weeks before the case was set to go to trial, according to Bloomberg. The lawsuit alleged that social media companies harmed students through addictive apps. This settlement removes what would have been the first social media addiction case to reach a jury.

The Kentucky case had drawn intense scrutiny as the first scheduled trial among dozens of similar lawsuits around the country. Meta and TikTok remain as defendants in the underlying lawsuit. The trial was set to begin next month in Oakland, California. Both companies described the settlement as "amicable," with YouTube stating it would continue working on age-appropriate products.

The companies still face numerous other lawsuits, including cases from school districts in New York and Seattle. Earlier this year, Snap settled another high-profile case in Los Angeles, while the jury in that case ultimately ruled against Meta and YouTube. Meta was recently ordered to pay a $375 million fine after losing a major civil trial in New Mexico over its safety practices.
