Samsung's New SSD Is Slower, More Expensive

Samsung has announced a new, non-Pro version of its 990 SSD lineup. While the original 990 Pro, released in 2022, offered impressive speeds, the new 990 SSD comes with a significant price increase and reduced performance.

The 1TB 990 SSD is priced at $270, and the 2TB model costs $530. This is considerably higher than the original 990 Pro's launch prices of $179 for 1TB and $309 for 2TB. Furthermore, the new 990 SSD is slower than its Pro predecessor. It boasts sequential read/write speeds of up to 7,250 MB/s and 6,450 MB/s, respectively, compared to the 990 Pro's 7,450 MB/s read and 6,900 MB/s write. Random performance also sees a decrease.

The price of the original 990 Pro has also increased, with the 1TB model now at $320 and the 2TB version at $640. Samsung attributes these hikes to soaring component costs, exacerbated by the high demand from the AI industry. This trend suggests consumers may face more frequent and substantial price increases for storage and RAM.
