Samsung's green dot security indicator explained: what it means for your privacy

That tiny green dot appearing in your Samsung phone's status bar isn't a glitch or hardware defect. It's actually an Android security feature that alerts you when apps access your camera or microphone. The indicator first shows as a green tab with camera or mic icons before collapsing into a dot next to your battery and signal icons.

Google introduced this transparency tool with Android 12 in 2021 to give users better control over app permissions. When active, the dot remains visible until roughly five seconds after you close the accessing app. You can identify which specific app is using your camera or mic by swiping down and tapping the green dot in your notification shade.

If the indicator appears when no legitimate app should be recording, restart your device first. Samsung users can access Google Play Protect through Settings to run security scans. From the dot menu, you can also immediately revoke permissions by selecting the app and switching its access to 'don't allow' or 'ask every time.'

This visual permission monitoring represents Google's push for greater user awareness about app behavior. Unlike the green line display issue affecting some phones, this dot serves as an intentional privacy safeguard that puts control directly in users' hands.
