Samsung's Galaxy Watch 6 can predict vasovagal syncope (VVS) fainting episodes with 84.6% accuracy, according to a study published in the European Heart Journal. Partnering with Chung-Ang University Gwangmyeong Hospital in Korea, the tech analyzes heart rate variability data via the device's PPG sensor to provide up to five minutes of advance warning. This could help users prevent falls and injuries caused by sudden blood pressure drops.

Researchers tested the system on 132 patients with suspected VVS symptoms during induced fainting trials. The AI algorithm achieved 84.6% accuracy with 90% sensitivity and 64% specificity. Samsung's head of Health R&D, Jongmin Choi, called it a shift toward preventive care, though no release timeline exists for consumer use.

VVS affects up to 40% of people, often triggered by emotional stress or physical triggers like blood. While Samsung hasn't detailed implementation plans, the Galaxy Watch 8 already offers health alerts for sleep apnea, blood oxygen, and heart irregularities. The company aims to expand personalized health features despite potential regulatory hurdles.

This world-first breakthrough in wearable medical monitoring highlights Samsung's push into proactive healthcare solutions. However, accuracy limitations and legal considerations may delay consumer access, emphasizing the need for cautious deployment.
