A 20-year-old man was arrested by the San Francisco Police Department after allegedly throwing a Molotov cocktail at OpenAI CEO Sam Altman's house in the North Beach neighborhood. The incident occurred around 7:12 AM ET when the suspect threw an incendiary device at Altman's home, causing a fire at an exterior gate. Police responded to the scene and later arrested the suspect after he fled on foot and threatened to burn down OpenAI's headquarters.

According to the SFPD statement shared on X, officers found and arrested the suspect about an hour later while responding to a complaint at OpenAI's San Francisco office. An OpenAI spokesperson confirmed to Wired that no one was injured in the attack. The company expressed gratitude for the quick police response and is assisting with the ongoing investigation.

This attack comes amid growing public backlash against artificial intelligence technology. While AI tool usage continues to rise, reactions to AI's expanding role in gaming, customer service, and employment have become increasingly negative. Recent controversies surrounding Altman's leadership at OpenAI, including warnings about AI's impact on jobs and questions about his management style, have intensified scrutiny of the tech industry's rapid AI development.
