Roblox Segments Users Into Three Age‑Based Worlds

Roblox is pushing its first major overhaul since last year’s age‑verification rollout, this time separating users into three distinct worlds. Beginning in mid‑May, accounts will be slotted into Roblox Kids, Roblox Select or the full Roblox experience. In the United States the ranges are 5‑8, 9‑15 and 16+, each matching existing game maturity labels today.

Kids accounts receive the tightest restrictions: chat is disabled by default, and only Minimal or Mild games are available. Select users can chat with peers and trusted friends who passed a parent test, and they unlock Moderate content and baby‑friendly titles. Full‑age members gain all features, but Restricted games unlock only after eighteen in 2024.

Over half of Roblox’s 200‑plus‑million user base has already completed an age check via ID or face scan. The platform will force unverified players into a Kids‑like sandbox, blocking chat and higher‑rated games until they pass the verification. Developers must prove their identity and pay $5 a month for Roblox Plus to label their creations.

Roblox also rolls out two new parental controls in June: parents can block any game and disable direct chat until a child turns sixteen, and they can approve out‑of‑range titles case‑by‑case. Chief Safety Officer Matt Kaufman said the system continually compares user behavior to age data, prompting a re‑check if the two diverge. The move tightens safety nets.
