Roblox adds subscription hurdle for games targeting kids

Roblox introduces new publishing requirements for games targeting under-16 users, effective May 19. Creators must pass ID verification, 2FA, and hold an active Roblox Plus subscription, plus a new evaluation process. This adds a subscription hurdle for free distribution to younger audiences. The move follows months of tighter moderation after billions of asset uploads were scanned.

Publishers may still publish for personal use or for users over 16 after a basic age check and two‑day account age. Reaching all ages now requires ID verification, 2FA and a Roblox Plus subscription. Roblox will cover the Plus fee for about 100,000 creators for six months, provided they have a game with 100 hours of play in the past month and no major violations.

Games cleared for all ages enter an evaluation pipeline where they are first trialed with verified users over 16. Signals such as account age, spend and play history confirm engagement before moderation reviews the content. Roblox also plans to adopt the IARC rating framework, aligning its age labels with global standards. Creators must now meet these steps before younger players can access their titles.
